The presentation would focus on conceptual understanding of entrepreneurship by situating the Indian women in the context. It is argued that the best way to empower women is through entrepreneurship. Women are regarded as natural entrepreneurs thus their agency has significance in the development of the country. Entrepreneurship has also been found to be most conducive to their traditional gender roles. A few questions would be examined that why, when and how do women become entrepreneurs, the focus would also be on the nature and process of their entrepreneurship besides, how taking to entrepreneurship has given them power to negotiate their everyday realities. Considering the relevance of entrepreneurship for the development of women particularly from lower strata, the government of India has been taking initiatives in various ways. The role of government to promote entrepreneurship would be discussed with special reference to micro- credit schemes through the self- help groups in the rural areas.
