Social scientists of the Institute of Political and International Studies reflect on the second Trump presidency and US foreign policy.

About the event

The second Trump presidency seems to indicate a major sea change in US foreign policy. The US has arguably stepped back from its role as the provider of the rules-based international order, especially from being a champion of human rights and the rule of law, but also an enforcer of peace in conflicts. Instead, the administration has unapologetically promoted narrow self-interest in the form of the slogan of ‘America First.’ In major international conflicts, this suggests a return to great powers carving out spheres of influence not unlike the imperial politics of the late 19th century. In economic relations, Trump’s protectionism could upend the free trade principles of globalisation. But can Trump’s foreign policy be characterized by the concepts of realism? Should these changes be welcome? What are the implications for Ukraine and Gaza, and how should the European Union define its place in this changed (dis)order?

The English language event is hosted by the Institute for Political and International Studies (POLIR).

The discussants are hoping for a very open and interactive discussion with the audience.
