Eötvös Loránd University, Faculty of Social Sciences invites you to attend a public lecture given by MARIA MÄLKSOO (Senior Lecturer in International Security, Director of Research and Ethics, Convenor of MA in International Conflict and Security, Brussels School of International Studies, University of Kent) on 7 May 2018. 

The title of the lecture is: “MEMORY AT WAR AND MEMORY IN LAW IN RUSSIA, UKRAINE, AND POLAND”. The lecture will be held in English.

Why do states seek to defend their 'memory' by means of law, at times? How do the ways in which the past is remembered by states and societies influence their international relations? What is the conflict-generating and -sustaining potential of the social remembrance of wars and disputes? The lecture discusses these questions in light of the ongoing 'memory wars' between Russia and its former Soviet dependents, particularly Ukraine and Poland, and their respective 'memory laws'.

Dr Maria Mälksoo is a senior lecturer at the Brussels Schools of International Studies (University of Kent). She holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge (2008). Her research focuses on the intersections of security, memory, identity politics and critical IR theory themes she has explored in a monograph, as well as in numerous edited volume contributions and journal articles, most recently in International Studies Review and Security Dialogue.
