Databeads Recieves the Silver Information is Beautiful Award
The Databeads project has won the Silver Award in the “Arts, Entertainment and Culture” category at this year’s international Information is Beautiful Awards. This unique initiative was created by Eszter Katona, Assistant Professor at the Department of Social Research Methodology at Eötvös Loránd University, and Mihály Minkó, researcher at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design.

Databeads is a grassroots initiative that aims to take data visualization beyond the screen and into everyday life through wearable objects. In the project, the creators transform data into easy-to-make bracelets, offering a playful and creative approach to engaging with data. These bracelets are not just accessories, but conversation starters that can bring the wearer—and those around them—closer to shared reflection on data, society, and culture.

Commenting on the award, Eszter Katona said: “We didn’t expect such recognition when Misi and I started the Databeads project almost a year ago. Since then, a small team has formed around us, working on similar data-based, handcrafted projects using beads, embroidery, and crochet—and the collection has continued to grow.”

Databeads stood out in the field not only for its aesthetic appeal but also for its strong social message. This silver award marks another important step toward broader recognition of data-driven art and craft in Hungary.
