INVITATION. The Doctoral School of Sociology (ELTE, Faculty of Social Sciences) & the MTA–ELTE "Peripato" Research Center for Social Dynamics cordially invite you to attend the public lecture of Professor George Pleios, Head of the Department of Communication and Media Studies, School of Economics and Political Sciences at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

The title of the lecture is: (EU)elections and the media in Greece: from television to social media.

Abstract

The Americanization of political communication in pre-election periods in Greece has been intensified since 1996. This change is in line with the change in the model of Democracy, meaning the gradual transition from party democracy to media democracy. The development of platforms 2.0 combined with the social and political outcomes, especially since the beginning of crisis, contributes to the rapid transition to the use of social media during the pre-election periods by a large number of candidates and political formations. However, as it turns out, although the use of social media is widespread, its use is closer to the rules of the one-way old media and less to the rules of dialogical new media. This creates a gap which often has been filled by the commentary citizens' social media, which exacerbates political cynicism and the crisis of party democracy.
