Travel Grant for PhD students 2025
The ELTE Faculty of Social Sciences invites internal applications for funding for research and professional activities.

SCOPE OF APPLICANTS AND THE SUBJECT OF THE APPLICATIONS  

PhD students of the Faculty may apply for funding to attend conferences in Hungary or abroad, or to participate in summer/winter universities (or equivalent professional events) that are of particular importance for their professional development and dissertation. The application may provide for full or partial funding of the costs. Costs may include registration fees, travel and accommodation costs.

In the case of a conference, no support is available for passive participation, the student must be a speaker at the conference.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: ongoing until 31 October 2025, or until the budget runs out.

The activity described in the application can be realised any time until January 31, 2026 if the appicant has an active status at the university. Nevertheless, due to ELTE financial regulations all payments must be administered until 30 November 2025.

Applications may be submitted from January 2025 onward, and applications received by the 15th of the month will be evaluated once a month. The applications received are reviewed by the heads of the doctoral programmes with the help of the programme secretaries, on the basis of which the head of the Doctoral School will rank the applications and the final decision on the amount of funding is made by the Dean.

Applications can be submitted until the budget is exhausted, but no later than 31 October 2025.

The costs of attending a conference are refunded subsequently, by entering into a contract with the institute. Therefore please contact the Doctoral Office immediately after your application has been accepted.

INFORMATION RELATED TO THE SUBMISSION OF THE APPLICATIONS

Eligible activities for the grant:
Participation as a speaker at an academic conference (including online participation).

Participation in a summer/winter university (or equivalent professional event) highly

supportive to the student’s professional development.

The maximum amount that can be applied for is gross HUF 250,000. Full or partial funding of the costs is possible when evaluating the applications. The amount awarded may be combined with other grants received or the self-financed part for the same trip, but may only be used to purchase the items indicated in the application.

The applications must be submitted on the attached form in Word or in an editable PDF format.

In addition to the form, the following annexes need to the attached:

  • the MTMT2 publication list,

  • confirmation of acceptance of the abstract (if the applicant already has one),

  • statement of support by the PhD student's supervisor.

All PDF attachments must be sent electronically only to the following email address: doktori@tatk.elte.hu. Please indicate ‘PhD Faculty Travel Grant 2025’ and the name of the applicant in the subject line of the letter.

PhD students can only apply if they are currently active and must remain active during the period of the implementation of the funded activity.

It is compulsory to indicate on the application form if other university funding will be used for the trip. The same activity cannot be supported by both university and faculty funding.

BUDGET PLAN

Please exercise due diligence when planning your budget, taking into account normal market prices. There is no possibility of subsequently increasing the amount of subsidy granted.

Reimbursement of self-financed costs (based on invoice) is only possible for domestic travel, in which case the invoice must be issued to ELTE's name and central address (Eötvös Loránd Tudományegyetem; 1053 Budapest, Egyetem tér 1-3. VAT number: 15308744-2-41).

For public transport, only full fare tickets are accepted. The University cannot provide fuel allowance for PhD students.

In the case of a successful application, before any costs are paid, the applicant must contact the Doctoral Office at the following email address: doktori@tatk.elte.hu!

DURING AND AFTER THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE PROJECT

After the implementation of the project the following documents must be submitted to the following email address: doktori@tatk.elte.hu within 15 days.

  • A 1-page text report. Where and when was the conference or summer/winter university held. For conferences, the abstract of the presentation may be included. The report submitted can be published on the faculty website.

  • In the case of a conference, please include the ppt-slides or the written form of the presentation with your report. (This material will not be published on the website unless the student requests it.)

  • Please also attach the certificate of participation issued by the conference or summer/winter university organisers to your report. (This material will not be published on the website.)

  • Some photos (screenshots) of the speaker taken at the conference or summer/winter university. The photos can also be optionally displayed on the faculty website.

The Privacy Notice related to the above requirements is available as Annex 2 to this invitation for applications. By submitting an application, the applicant agrees to the terms and conditions set out in the Privacy Notice.

THE CONDITIONS FOR SUBMITTING AN APPLICATION

  1. Applications can be submitted even without an accepted abstract, but it is a condition for the grant to be awarded and paid that the applicant has an accepted abstract.

  2. If the student has submitted faculty applications before, it is a condition that the applicant has duly fulfilled its previous reporting obligations.

  3. The application is also subject to updating the MTMT2 publication list (upload the MTMT2 publication list, assign the publications to the institution, and under 'Edit my data' in the data sheet, under the ‘all publications to date' and ‘all citations to date' headings, enter the date of the update)

  4. An applicant may request a maximum of 250.000 Ft per semester and the same student may be awarded a maximum of four successful applications during the entire doctoral programme.

EVALUATION OF THE APPLICATIONS

The applications received are evaluated by the heads of the doctoral programmes with the help of the programme secretaries and ranked by the head of the Doctoral

School, on the basis of which the Dean will make the final decision on the application and on the amount of the funding. Full or partial funding of the costs is possible when evaluating the applications. In making their decision, the Committee and the Dean will take into account the following criteria:

  1. Compliance with the conditions for applying.

  2. Whether the application is for an activity covered by the invitation for applications.

  3. In the case of participation in a conference, whether the applicant has an accepted abstract (an accepted abstract will be an advantage in the evaluation. If the applicant does not yet have an accepted abstract at the application stage, this is not a reason for disqualification, but in the case of a successful application, the submission of an accepted abstract is a condition for payment).

  4. In the case of summer/winter university participation, how well does the participation serve the student's professional progress.

  5. Whether the planned activity can be carried out with other sources of funding.

  6. Whether the budget is realistic.

  7. The amount applied for in relation to the total budget available.

  8. Whether there is a faculty interest in the activity indicated in the application.

  9. Whether the applicant has received funding in the past and, if so, what was the productive outcome (e.g.: preparation and publication of a scientific paper, etc.).

  10. How the application would help the applicant's career or the courses they teach.

  11. The professional prestige of the conference or summer/winter university applied for. A conference or summer/winter university is excluded if it is predatory  in       nature (see: https://tatk.elte.hu/dstore/document/2388/Predatory_journals_confs.pdf)

  12. Preference will be given to students who have not yet had a winning application or who have had fewer winning applications.
