The Department of Human Rights and Politics was established in 2017 as a result of structural reorganisation at the Institute of International and Political Studies. It is the only Department in Hungary that focuses on human rights and politics through the lenses of social sciences, thereby offering a broader perspectve to discuss the major developments in these fields.

The Department’s teaching profile

The Department coordinates the International Human Rights specialisation of the two-year International Studies MA programme and the one-year Postgraduate Specialist Training Program in International Human Rights, as well as the Venice-based European Master’s Programme in Human Rights and Democratisation (EMA). The Department hosts students from the EMA program, who also write their theses under the supervision of our professors.

The Department offers courses in politics and human rights in the Hungarian and English BA and MA programmes in International Studies and carries out teaching activities in the International Studies PhD programme too.

The Department’s research profile

Our research profile covers several study areas ranging from political theory, constitutional theory, comparative constitutional law, comparative politics, democracy studies, European politics, human rights, resistance and resilience, gender studies, and minority protection. The Department has participated in several European research projects (FP7, ERC) and has organized and co-organised several international conferences. We regularly organise events, seminars and book launches, such as the Political Theory Book Corner.

International cooperation

We are a member institution of the Association of Human Rights Institutes (AHRI), which carries out research and educational activities in the field of human rights. We also participate in the Global Campus of Human Rights, Europe – the European Master’s Programme in Human Rights and Democratisation. The national EMA director is Orsolya Salát. The Department hosts the UNESCO Chair in Human Rights and Peace. The current chair is Balázs Majtényi.

The Department hosts visiting scholars e.g. under the Marie Curie and Fulbright programmes.

The Department publishes Fundamentum, a Hungarian Human Rights quarterly, which addresses important issues of domestic and international human rights developments.
