10. When does the ELTE academic year start/end?
You can find detailed information about the academic calendar, including important dates, on this website.
The academic year in Hungary begins in September and is divided into two semesters: the autumn semester and the spring semester. Both semesters are structured with a registration period at the beginning, followed by the study period, and concluding with the examination period.
General structure of the academic year:
Semester 1 (Autumn)
- Registration period: Early September
- Study period: Early September – Mid-December
- Examination period: Mid-December – End of January/Early February
Semester 2 (Spring)
- Registration period: Early February
- Study period: Early February – Mid-May
- Examination period: Mid-May – Early July
During the autumn semester, there is typically a one-week break in October or November. In the spring semester, a one-week break usually occurs around Easter, in March or April. Summer vacation extends from the end of the spring semester until the start of the autumn semester.
11. Where can I find the important dates, such as the course registration period, exam registration period, academic training period, exam period and other key deadlines?
You can find all the necessary dates and deadlines, including course registration periods, exam registration periods, academic training periods, and exam periods, at this link.
This website provides up-to-date information to help you plan your academic year effectively. Please make sure to check it regularly so you don’t miss any important deadlines!
12. What do ranking and first-come, first-served course registration period mean?
At the Faculty of Social Sciences, course registration generally happens in two phases:
During the ranking registration period, the available slots are distributed based on a ranking system and class capacity. Please make sure that you are still registered for your courses after the ranking period has ended.
You can see your ranking sequence in Available courses. At the end of the ranking registration period, the so-called ’cut’ will drop students who registered for the course, but whose rank is too low (your ranking point is too high) and will not fit in the course’s maximum headcount limit. If you see in Neptun that your ranking sequence is higher than the maximum headcount number, the system will drop you from the course during the cut.
If several students have the same rank and the number of students on the course exceeds the maximum headcount limit, the lucky point – a ’random’ number set up by Neptun – will decide who gets accepted based on the following criteria:
This number depends only on the code generated by the Electronic Educational System (Neptun code), the training period, and the unique identification number of the course.
If a student deregisters from a course and then registers again, they will receive the same lucky point.
The expected value of the place of every student in the sequence generated by the random numbers will be the same.
The remaining slots are filled up by the order of registration during "first-come, first-served" period. Some courses may only be available during this period.
13. When can I register for courses?
You can find all the necessary dates and deadlines, including course registration periods at this link. Information will also be sent to you by email before the course registration period.

The specific course list and details for each semester are announced in Neptun shortly before the start of the course registration period. Once the information is available, you can view and register for courses under Subjects > Register for a subject in Neptun. If you cannot find a subject, double check your search settings (try filtering both ‘Subjects from curriculum’ and ‘All other subjects in the institution’ in ‘Subject type’; and search by the name or code of the subject)!

18. Can I register for BA/BSc courses as an MA/MSc incoming exchange student?
MA students can register for BA/BSc courses if the course is published as open to both BA/BSc and MA/MSc students, or if the home university approves such course selection.
19. Can I choose courses that are not listed in the list of courses for international exchange students?
If you would like to register for a course which is not listed on the list of offered courses for international exchange students, please contact the lecturer directly via email (you can search on the faculty’s website by name for their contact details) and seek their permission for joining. In case the lecturer approves your request, please forward the written approval to the international@tatk.elte.hu email address.
20. I changed some courses. Should I indicate it in the Learning Agreement?
Yes, any changes made to the course selection indicated in the Learning Agreement should be made in the Learning Agreement’s ‘Changes’/’During Mobility’ section. Course registration will not be possible unless these conditions are met.
If the issue persists despite the steps mentioned above, please reach out to the international coordinator.

Please make sure that your student status has been activated (Administration > Enrollment/Registration) and that the course registration period has already begun. You may also try filtering for both ‘Subjects from curriculum’ and ‘All other subjects in the institution’ in ‘Subject type’, and searching by the exact name or code of the subject in the ‘Register for subject’ tab.
If none of the above tips are successful, please contact the international coordinator for further assistance.
24. I cannot register for courses in Neptun, the system is not working. What can I do?

Course registration will not be possible unless these conditions are met. If the error persists nevertheless, please reach out to the international coordinator with an explanation and/or screenshot of the problem.
25. Can I register for courses that are not part of my Learning Agreement?
You may register for courses outside your Learning Agreement if your home university approves their addition. You will have the chance to administer any changes made to your Learning Agreement during the semester in its ‘Changes’/’During Mobility’ section. For questions regarding the suitability of courses and their recognition at your home university, please consult your home university coordinator.

If you are unable to enroll in a course because it has reached its capacity, you may register for an alternative course that aligns with your interests and is approved by your home university until the end of the course registration period. Please check whether the course is taught in English; whether the subject you are considering is available for exchange students by checking the designated website. If the course is not listed, you may seek the permission of the lecturer to join their course.
If no suitable alternative is available, you may contact the lecturer via email or in person to request permission to join the course after the registration period has ended. With their approval email forwarded to the International Office, the international coordinator will add you to the course (Please make sure to include the code and name of the subject in your email). The deadline for the submission for such requests is specified via email by the International Office for each semester.
Please register only for the courses you intend to attend, rather than enrolling in extra courses as a precaution to secure enough credits. The International Office assists exchange students in obtaining the required ECTS credits; however, full-time ELTE students do not have the option of late registration. If they are unable to enroll in a course, they must register for it in a later semester.
28. How can I drop courses?
You can drop a registered subject until the end of the course registration period on Neptun, in the ‘Subjects’ > ‘Register for a subject’ tab. By opening the window of the given subject, make sure to select the course and click on the ‘More functions’ button > ‘Drop subject’ option.

You can access Canvas with your Neptun ID, and Teams with an institutional email address (find more details about how to acquire one on this website).

38. How can I register for an exam?
You may register for exams during the exam period on Neptun, ‘Exams’ > ‘Exam registration’, for dates specified by your lecturer, up until 24 hours before the date of the exam. Registration for each exam date needs to be done manually.

40. What’s the grading system in Hungary?
The Hungarian academic credit system following the Hungarian law is an ECTS-compatible system. The calculation of the credits is based on the number of working hours of the students (one credit is 30 student working hours, on average).
At the end of the semester, the student’s study achievement is evaluated with a grade (5-excellent, 4-good, 3-medium or satisfactory, 2-sufficient or pass, 1-fail). The ECTS conversion table ensures transfer procedures between the Hungarian academic credit system and the ECTS. The recognition of courses completed abroad is based on the credit transfer regulation.
For incoming international students, a Transcript of Records is issued at the end of the semester, which contains the code and title of the completed courses, credits, grade, and its ECTS-compatible grade.
ELTE grade - Equivalent ECTS grade:

However, in some cases, you may receive an “offered grade” based on your academic performance during midterms and classes, allowing you to complete the course before the exam period. If you are eligible for an offered grade, you must either accept or reject it in Neptun by the specified deadline.
