Free English Course for Students
For the 2024/25 fall semester.
Dear Students, this is the 6th semester that our Faculty offers a free general and academic English course for students who are enrolled in any of our full degree programs taught in English. Thus, students who are: 1) studying at our Faculty in the framework of any bilateral exchange agreement (Erasmus+, Makovecz, etc.) or 2) are enrolled in program taught in Hungarian are unfortunately not eligible for participating in this course. Also, please note that this course can be taken/completed only two times (during two semesters) by the same student. To learn more about the free English course, please read the below content written by our course leaders: Luca & Rhys. If you decide to sign up for the course, please register here: https://tatk.elte.hu/RegistrationfreeEnglishLanguageCourse before September 20, 2024 10 a.m.
Thank you for showing an interest in our English language course! Below you will find lots of necessary and important information that is required for our course. So, without further ado, let’s get onto the important stuff.
Who is this course for?
This course is for all those studying at the Faculty of Social Sciences, ELTE. It has been designed to help students practice and improve both their everyday and academic English skills. If you would like to be more confident, sound more native or just simply practice in a friendly and welcoming environment, then it is for you!
This course is designed to help you utilise and improve the knowledge you already have in an academic setting. We cater for all abilities with our split groups and tailored curriculum based on your needs. In our classes, you will get to practice all four English language skills as well as key academic skills such as presenting, skim reading and critical thinking.
OK, I am interested. Tell me more!
First things first, you will need to complete a placement test if you are new to the course. This test is designed to test your current English level and should take you no more than two hours to complete (usually students complete this in 1 – 1.5 hours). We ask you to complete this so we can assess your needs and place you in the correct group based on your ability.
Once you have been assigned to a group, all you need to do is attend classes regularly. The students who attend classes regularly and complete the associated homework will improve and enjoy classes the most. We will keep a register and if we notice your attendance is low, we will contact you and suggest some alternatives to help you through your studies.
What teaching style do you use?
We use the communicative method to teach you. This means the focus will be on communication rather than perfect grammar all the time. We will not ask you to learn word lists or grammar concepts; rather we want you to be able to use them naturally and spontaneously. Of course, vocabulary and grammar are important, especially when it comes to sounding more professional and academic. We will teach you how and when to use formal English appropriately and cover essential grammar concepts.
When and where are the lessons?
Usually, we have 60-minute sessions Tuesday – Thursday, in the late afternoons/early evenings. This could change semester-to-semester depending on your timetabled lessons for your course modules.
The course is designed for one academic year. You may attend classes in both semesters one and two, and in following years as we will have multiple curriculums meaning you will cover new material each year.
The lessons will take place in a seminar room within the faculty’s building. Each room will be equipped with a projector, desks and a chalk board.
You will be informed as soon as possible regarding the exact time and place of the sessions.
Is this course compulsory and worth credits?
This course is not compulsory and it is worth credits. You will be marked on your attendance and overall progression in class rather than your marks being decided on an end-of-semester/year exam graded paper. The course will be registered in Neptun. We are simply here to help you improve your English skills so you can achieve higher grades in all of the modules you take. It will also help your social life as you will become more confident when conversing with fellow students.
Will we have graded exams?
You will have one placement exam to complete before starting the course if you are new. This is to place you in the right group based on your ability and needs. You will also have one final exam at the end of the year to show your improvement. Although these are graded, the final end of year exam mark will not be the only deciding factor in your grade.
