Hi! I'm Luna 👋
Have questions about studying at ELTE Faculty of Social Sciences? I'm here to help you find the information you need.
Choose your application route
Please select the application route that applies to you. The application platform and deadlines depend on the type of admission procedure and funding scheme.
Important: Please submit your application through the platform corresponding to your application route. Different deadlines, document requirements, and procedural rules may apply.
Self-funded application periods and fees
The following application periods and application fees apply only to applicants applying directly to ELTE for self-funded studies through DreamApply.
Application fees are non-refundable. The fees above apply to self-funded applicants and do not apply to scholarship applicants.
This ELTE self-funded application fee DOES NOT apply to scholarship applicants. Stipendium Hungaricum and Diaspora applications and participation in the related admission examination are free of charge under the programme rules.
Scholarship applicants
If you apply through Stipendium Hungaricum or the Hungarian Diaspora Scholarship, please always follow the current Call for Applications (SH, DFP) issued by the scholarship programme.
The scholarship programme may set different:
- application deadlines;
- document submission and supplementation deadlines;
- eligibility requirements;
- nomination procedures;
- application-platform requirements.
The Faculty’s programme-specific academic admission requirements still apply, but the scholarship application procedure is governed by the relevant scholarship programme rules.
Admission requirements
Admission requirements
Required educational qualification
To be admitted to a Bachelor’s programme, you must hold a secondary school leaving qualification that gives access to higher education.
If you completed secondary education outside Hungary, your secondary school leaving certificate must be recognised for the purpose of further studies in Hungary.
You do not need to submit a separate recognition application to another Hungarian authority for admission to ELTE Faculty of Social Sciences. Recognition for the purpose of further studies is carried out as part of the Faculty’s admission procedure. Under Hungarian law, the higher education institution where the applicant intends to study is competent to give this recognition.
Documents to submit with application:
- Records of the final two years of secondary school
- Secondary school certificate
- Motivation letter
- Copy of the main pages of passport (needs to be valid)
- The official application fee payment receipt, or the invoice sent by the ePay system to the provided email address
- Language certificate (just for Sociology BA: IELTS Score: 5.5 or TOEFL IBT Band: 46-59 or Cambridge English Scale Score: 162)
Still completing secondary school?
You may apply while you are still completing your secondary education.
If your final Secondary School Certificate and/or final Transcript of Records is not yet available at the time of application, upload the documents available at that time together with evidence of your ongoing studies. Everything else needs to be submitted until the given deadline.
The missing final educational documents must be submitted no later than August 1st.
A final Letter of Acceptance can only be issued once all mandatory admission documents have been submitted, and the required recognition procedure has been completed by the university.
Incomplete applications and missing documents
If your passport has expired, is not yet available, or is due to expire soon, you may temporarily upload a valid national ID card instead. However, you must upload a valid passport as soon as it becomes available but no later than August 1st.
The language certificate may be submitted after the original application deadline if it is not available at the time of application, but no later than August 1.
Applicants are normally given at least 3 working days to complete a formal request for missing documents in an institutional admission procedure.
Please note: the application will not be processed if the application fee receipt/invoice is not uploaded.
Please check your DreamApply account and registered email address regularly during the admission procedure.
Admission assessment
After each application deadline, the International Office reviews the submitted applications.
Once all documents required for the admission assessment have been submitted, your application proceeds to the program-specific selection procedure. Depending on the program, this may include an entrance examination, an interview, a video submission, or a combination of these. In multi-stage procedures, an interview may only be required based on the evaluation of the previous stage.
If an interview or entrance examination is required, you will receive the relevant details via email, including the date, format, and any technical or academic requirements.
For details, see Prepare for the entrance examination on the page of the relevant program.
Admission results are communicated electronically through the online application system.

Tuition fee
The tuition fee for all Bachelor’s program is EUR 2700 per semester. For applicants from EEA countries, the tuition fee is EUR 1200 per semester.
The tuition fee is paid per semester. Following admission, your Letter of Acceptance will contain the relevant payment information and an indicative 15-day payment deadline for the first semester’s tuition fee.
For applicants who require a visa to enter Hungary, the first semester’s tuition fee must be paid before the visa appointment. We recommend transferring the tuition fee at least one week before the visa appointment.
For applicants from EEA or visa-waiver countries, the general payment deadline is 15 October for the autumn semester and 15 March for the spring semester.
Scholarship holders whose tuition fee is covered by their scholarship do not have to pay the tuition fee.
Tuition fee refunds and reservation fee
Tuition fees paid by newly admitted students may only be refunded under the conditions set out in the Faculty’s Refund Policy.
For newly admitted students, refund requests must be submitted by:
- 15 October for the autumn semester;
- 15 March for the spring semester.
| Reason for not starting the programme | Reservation fee retained by the Faculty |
|---|---|
| Visa refusal | 10% of the paid tuition fee |
| Other reasons | 100% of the paid tuition fee |
| Programme cancelled by ELTE and the applicant does not accept another eligible programme | 0% – full refund |
In cases other than visa refusal, the 100% reservation fee may be reduced to 10% upon the applicant’s written request, subject to the decision of the Faculty leadership.
In exceptional cases, an applicant may submit a Vice-Dean’s Equity Request asking for the reservation fee to be reduced to 0%. The request must contain individual and well-substantiated reasons, and approval is subject to the decision of the Faculty leadership.
Tuition fees are non-transferable and non-deferrable.
Please note that changes in the EUR/HUF exchange rate may result in a difference between the amount originally paid and the amount eventually refunded.
Visa refusal or residence permit rejection
For newly admitted students who do not enroll, tuition fees may be refunded after the beginning of the registration period if they can provide official evidence that:
- their visa application to Hungary was refused; or
- their application for the extension of their Hungarian residence permit was rejected.
In case of visa refusal, 10% of the paid tuition fee is retained as a reservation fee.
Where applicable, legally incurred administrative costs related to deportation may also be deducted from the refunded amount.
How to request a refund
Refund requests must be submitted in writing by email to the International Office at international@tatk.elte.hu.
All documents must be sent in PDF format attached to the refund request.
The refund request must include:
- a digitally completed Refund Data Sheet – handwritten forms are not accepted;
- an official request letter or email addressed to the International Office explaining the reason for the refund request and including your full name, date, and place of birth;
- your Letter of Acceptance;
- confirmation of payment, including the relevant Neptun invoice showing payment of the tuition fee;
- the bank transfer certificate or bank slip;
- a colour copy of your passport;
- documents supporting the reason for your request, where applicable;
- in case of visa or residence permit refusal, the official refusal decision issued by the Hungarian authorities;
- a Vice-Dean’s Equity Request, where you are requesting a tuition fee refund for a reason other than visa or residence permit refusal.
A refund request is considered submitted once you have received written confirmation from the Faculty that your request has been received.
Refunds can only be transferred to the account from which the original payment was made.
It is the applicant’s responsibility to provide clear evidence that the tuition fee to be refunded was actually paid.
How long does a refund take?
The decision on a refund request may take up to 12 weeks.
Once the refund has been approved, the financial transfer itself may take up to 120 calendar days.
Entrance examination results
Admission results are communicated electronically through the application system.
Applicants are informed of:
- the outcome of the admission procedure;
- the score or assessment result, where applicable;
- any outstanding conditions or missing documents.
