To mark World Refugee Day, the Faculty of Social Sciences at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE TáTK) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) are co-hosting a public event focusing on the 75th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention.
The half-day event, scheduled for June 25, will examine the situation of refugees and asylum seekers from both policy and societal perspectives, with particular attention to the expected impact of the European Union’s new migration and asylum framework.
The event is organized around three parts. It opens with az English panel discussion in which experts assess key developments in refugee policy over recent decades and examine the significance of the EU’s new Pact on Migration and Asylum. This will be followed by the opening of a UNHCR photo exhibition, which brings audiences closer to the lived realities of displaced people through personal stories and compelling visual narratives. During the closing discussion in Hungarian, representatives of civil society organizations founded by affected individuals living in Hungary, as well as organizations that provide direct assistance to refugees, will share their perspectives, enriching the policy discussion with their personal experiences.
Bringing together researchers, policymakers, and a broader audience, the event provides a platform for collective reflection on one of today’s most pressing and complex social issues, with a focus on the changes set to shape refugee protection in Europe and Hungary in the years ahead.
