The Workshop of the Institute of Sociology at ELTE Faculty of Social Sciences invites students, faculty, and researchers to a guest lecture by Benno Gammerl (European University Institute).

In his lecture, Benno Gammerl will examine German history since the early nineteenth century from the perspective of overlapping forms of marginalization. Drawing on an intersectional approach, he will discuss topics such as the relationship between nationality law, gender, and national belonging, as well as the challenges posed by competing claims to victimhood.

Through these examples, the lecture seeks to shed light on the interconnected nature of racism, cis-heterosexism, classism, and other discriminatory dynamics, highlighting how different forms of inequality have historically reinforced one another.

Benno Gammerl is a professor at the European University Institute whose research focuses on the history of sexuality, emotions, migration, and discrimination in modern Europe. His work has made significant contributions to understanding how social categories and power structures intersect across different historical contexts.
