Scholarship applicants

The scholarship programme may set different:

  • application deadlines;
  • document submission and supplementation deadlines;
  • eligibility requirements;
  • nomination procedures;
  • application-platform requirements.

The Faculty’s programme-specific academic admission requirements still apply, but the scholarship application procedure is governed by the relevant scholarship programme rules.

Admission requirements
Required educational qualification

To be admitted to a Master’s programme, you must hold an appropriate Bachelor’s degree or another higher education qualification adequate for entry to the programme.

The exact academic background and previous-study requirements vary by programme. Please consult the Application page of your chosen programme.

If your Bachelor’s degree was obtained outside Hungary, ELTE carries out the required recognition of the foreign degree for the purpose of further studies as part of the admission procedure. You do not normally need to obtain a separate Hungarian recognition decision before applying.

Documents to submit with application:

  • Bachelor-level degree
  • Transcript of Records (if your studies are still in progress, please submit a current Transcript of Records including both your previously completed courses and the courses you are enrolled in during the current semester)
  • Motivation letter
  • Copy of the main pages of passport (needs to be valid)
  • The official application fee payment receipt, or the invoice sent by the ePay system to the provided email address
  • CV (for Computational Social and Behavioral Science MA)
Still completing your Bachelor’s degree?

You may apply while you are still completing your Bachelor’s studies.

If your final Bachelor’s degree certificate and/or final Transcript of Records is not yet available at the time of application, upload the documents available at that time together with evidence of your ongoing studies. Everything else needs to be submitted until the given deadline.

The missing final educational documents must be submitted no later than August 1st.

A final Letter of Acceptance can only be issued once all mandatory admission documents have been submitted and the applicable recognition and credit-assessment requirements have been completed by the university.

Credit recognition for Master’s applicants

Admission to certain Master’s programmes requires applicants to have completed a specified number of credits in particular academic fields during their previous studies.

You do not need to submit a separate credit recognition request.

Once you have submitted a complete application package containing the documents required for the recognition of your previous studies, the Faculty initiates the credit assessment recognition as part of the admission procedure.

For the credit recognition, make sure that your application includes:

  • your Bachelor’s degree certificate, if already available;
  • a complete Transcript of Records showing the courses and credits completed during your previous studies;

If you are still completing your Bachelor’s studies, please submit the most recent official Transcript of Records available at the time of application. The Faculty may request an updated or final Transcript of Records at a later stage of the admission procedure.

If you meet the minimum entry requirement but have not completed all credits required by the relevant programme, you may be admitted with a requirement to complete specified additional credits during your studies, where this is permitted by the applicable programme requirements.

Programme-specific credit requirements are available on the page of each Master’s programme.

Incomplete applications and missing documents

If your passport has expired, is not yet available, or is due to expire soon, you may temporarily upload a valid national ID card instead. However, you must upload a valid passport as soon as it becomes available but no later than August 1st.

Applicants are given at least 3 working days to complete a formal request for missing documents in an institutional admission procedure.

Please note: the application will not be processed if the application fee receipt/invoice is not uploaded.

Please check your DreamApply account and registered email address regularly during the admission procedure.

Admission assessment and selection

After each application deadline, the International Office reviews the submitted applications.

Once all documents required for the admission assessment have been submitted, applicants are invited to an admission interview.

You will receive the details of the interview via email, including the date, format and any technical or academic requirements.

For details, see Prepare for the entrance examination on the Application page of the relevant programme.

Admission results are communicated electronically through the online application system.

The tuition fee is paid per semester. Following admission, your Letter of Acceptance will contain the relevant payment information and an indicative 15-day payment deadline for the first semester’s tuition fee.

For applicants who require a visa to enter Hungary, the first semester’s tuition fee must be paid before the visa appointment. We recommend transferring the tuition fee at least one week before the visa appointment.

For applicants from EEA or visa-waiver countries, the general payment deadline is 15 October for the autumn semester and 15 March for the spring semester.

Scholarship holders whose tuition fee is covered by their scholarship do not have to pay the tuition fee.

Tuition fee refunds and reservation fee

Tuition fees paid by newly admitted students may only be refunded under the conditions set out in the Faculty’s Refund Policy.

For newly admitted students, refund requests must be submitted by:

  • 15 October for the autumn semester;
  • 15 March for the spring semester.
Reason for not starting the programmeReservation fee retained by the Faculty
Visa refusal10% of the paid tuition fee
Other reasons100% of the paid tuition fee
Programme cancelled by ELTE and the applicant does not accept another eligible programme0% – full refund

In cases other than visa refusal, the 100% reservation fee may be reduced to 10% upon the applicant’s written request, subject to the decision of the Faculty leadership.

In exceptional cases, an applicant may submit a Vice-Dean’s Equity Request asking for the reservation fee to be reduced to 0%. The request must contain individual and well-substantiated reasons, and approval is subject to the decision of the Faculty leadership.

Tuition fees are non-transferable and non-deferrable.

Please note that changes in the EUR/HUF exchange rate may result in a difference between the amount originally paid and the amount eventually refunded.

Visa refusal or residence permit rejection

For newly admitted students who do not enroll, tuition fees may be refunded after the beginning of the registration period if they can provide official evidence that:

  • their visa application to Hungary was refused; or
  • their application for the extension of their Hungarian residence permit was rejected.

In case of visa refusal, 10% of the paid tuition fee is retained as a reservation fee.

Where applicable, legally incurred administrative costs related to deportation may also be deducted from the refunded amount.

How to request a refund

Refund requests must be submitted in writing by email to the International Office at international@tatk.elte.hu .

All documents must be sent in PDF format attached to the refund request.

The refund request must include:

  • A digitally completed Refund Data Sheet – handwritten forms are not accepted;
  • an official request letter or email addressed to the International Office explaining the reason for the refund request and including your full name, place, and date of birth;
  • your Letter of Acceptance;
  • confirmation of payment, including the relevant Neptun invoice showing payment of the tuition fee;
  • the bank transfer certificate or bank slip;
  • a colour copy of your passport;
  • documents supporting the reason for your request, where applicable;
  • in case of visa or residence permit refusal, the official refusal decision issued by the Hungarian authorities;
  • a Vice-Dean’s Equity Request, where you are requesting a tuition fee refund for a reason other than visa or residence permit refusal.

A refund request is considered submitted once you have received written confirmation from the Faculty that your request has been received.

Refunds can only be transferred to the account from which the original payment was made.

It is the applicant’s responsibility to provide clear evidence that the tuition fee to be refunded was actually paid.

How long does a refund take?

The decision on a refund request may take up to 12 weeks.

Once the refund has been approved, the financial transfer itself may take up to 120 calendar days.
