MIXED Research Group Welcomes a New Intern

Starting from May 2026, MIXED Research Group will be joined by an intern, Madeleine Schmuckler from the University of Toronto, who will spend three months at the ELTE Faculty of Social Sciences (ELTE Társadalomtudományi Kar), working on the historical portion of the “Mixed Families: Searching for Identity and Belonging in Post-Conflict Societies” project.

Madeleine Schmuckler is a masters student at the Centre for European and Eurasian Studies, University of Toronto. She completed her undergraduate studies in 2025 at the University of Toronto, studying European Affairs, History, and Chemistry, and is set to complete her master's degree in 2027.

Her research focuses on Soviet Central and Eastern Europe, with an emphasis on Hungary in a transnational context. Her MA thesis will concentrate on child refugees of the Greek Civil War who were forcibly displaced to Hungary, investigating their lives through the language of ethnic identity and diaspora studies. Her other projects focus on daily life and state security in the Hungarian Communist period, student protest movements in the 1960s in Toronto, and the Canadian Anglican Communist movement.
