Competition restriction, corruption

Our research focuses on transparency and corruption risks in public procurement, using large-scale procurement databases and textual data. By applying natural language processing (NLP) and quantitative methods, we examine how the linguistic and substantive characteristics of public procurement documents may indicate restrictions on competition or conditions that favor particular economic actors. Our research aims to identify textual patterns and indicators that can contribute to the systematic analysis of competition and corruption risks in public procurement. Our approach also enables comparative analyses of Hungarian and international public procurement data.

Campaign analysis

The Survey Methods Room research group examines the relationships between political communication, public opinion, and electoral behavior. In our research, we combine survey methods, social media data, and natural language processing (NLP) techniques. Our aim is to explore how the topics and messages communicated by political actors appear in the public sphere, how citizens respond to them, and how they relate to political attitudes and electoral behavior. This approach also enables the systematic description and comparison of the communication strategies and thematic characteristics of political campaigns.

Critical data studies

Our research focuses on the social scientific study of how data visualizations are perceived and interpreted. We examine the emotional responses elicited by different types of data visualizations and their visual elements, and how these emotions influence the interpretation of data and the formation of related attitudes and opinions. The research combines qualitative and innovative data collection methods, including interviews, focus groups, and visualization diaries. A key objective is to develop and test methodological approaches that enable a deeper understanding of the role of emotions in the creation, reception, and interpretation of data visualizations. In doing so, the research contributes both to understanding the social and communicative dimensions of data visualization and to developing social science methods suitable for studying these processes.
